Alexey Shapkin: Why ‘just calm down’ doesn’t work — and what a pack of dogs on a bridge has to do with it

Alexey Shapkin: Por qué ‘simplemente cálmate’ no funciona y qué tiene que ver una jauría de perros en un puente

A video of a dog paralyzed by fear on a suspension bridge becomes a starting point for an elegant explanation of the neurobiology of phobias. The key idea: fear lives not in the cortex, but in the limbic system — the very one we share with dogs. That is why rational arguments literally fail to reach a person during panic.

The author honestly answers the uncomfortable question: if everything comes down to conditioning, why do we need a therapist at all? Humans, unlike dogs, are also afraid of fear itself, creating a secondary layer of anxiety — the fear of fear — and that layer is hard to disentangle without professional help. In this process, the therapist plays the role of a supportive pack.

Editorial Context

Shapkin brilliantly translates the complex language of neurobiology (amygdala, prefrontal cortex) into clear metaphors. This is an excellent example of psychoeducation that can be safely recommended to clients with panic attacks.

But the most interesting part is how the pack resolves the problem. The dogs on the bridge do not drag the frightened one by force, do not abandon him, and do not rush him. They accompany him gently, effectively reproducing exposure — the gold standard of behavioral therapy for avoidance patterns.
