Анастасия Ткачева: стремление к социальному успеху часто маскирует детский страх «оказаться внизу рейтинга»

Anastasia Tkacheva: The Pursuit of Social Success Often Masks a Childhood Fear of “Falling to the Bottom of the Ranking”

Anastasia Tkacheva: La búsqueda del éxito social a menudo enmascara un miedo infantil a “quedar al final del ranking”

The drive for social success is often not a true goal but a compensatory response to an old fear of being “worse than others.” Psychologist-consultant and AKPP member Anastasia Tkacheva explains how this distortion forms and why it can devalue an otherwise stable life for years.

In her case example, a 28-year-old corporate lawyer felt globally inadequate: peers were launching companies and wintering on islands, while she remained an employee. Objectively, her life was stable and well-structured, yet she still experienced herself as a “failure.”

The core incident came from school. In fifth grade, a teacher posted a public academic ranking, and the girl was placed at the bottom. This event shaped a deep belief: “I am worse than others.” As an adult, she kept filtering reality through this lens—discounting her own achievements and constantly comparing herself unfavorably to others.

The therapeutic turning point happened during psychoeducation, when she understood the mechanism of this belief. She realized she did not truly want to open a business or live a nomadic lifestyle. She genuinely valued her stability, current role, and team. Her burnout came not from a lack of ambition, but from an unconscious attempt to prove she was no longer “at the bottom of the ranking.”

Takeaway: sometimes the key intervention is not a new career leap, but revising an outdated cognitive filter that no longer matches present reality.
