How harmful are social networks for today’s teenagers? In a new large-scale review published in the journal Cureus, scientists consolidated a vast body of data and meta-analyses from the past two decades to settle the central conflict between parents and children. The conclusion may surprise many parents: total time spent in front of a screen is only weakly linked to worsening mental health; the real threat lies in how adolescents actually use digital platforms. Social media is a double-edged sword capable of either destroying or supporting vulnerable young people.

The greatest danger lurks in so-called passive consumption. Endlessly scrolling through other people’s perfectly curated feeds without actively engaging with content or creators invariably leads to worsened mood and lower self-esteem. Nighttime phone use at the expense of sleep and cyberbullying are also powerful triggers of emotional dysregulation — cyberbullying critically raises the risk of depression, anxiety and suicidal ideation.

Yet the virtual world also has powerful psychotherapeutic potential. When young people use social networks for active communication with real friends, creative self-expression or finding a community of shared interests, their mental health is strengthened. For adolescents from marginalised communities and for teenagers with social anxiety, the internet often becomes the only safe haven of support and rescue from loneliness. Moreover, the abundance of educational psychological content and other people’s personal stories help teenagers shed the shame around their emotions and nudge them toward seeking professional help.

Of course, the consequences of scrolling depend greatly on the individual user’s baseline. Girls are far more vulnerable, as they are more likely to focus on content that exploits appearance standards and beauty ideals. Younger adolescents suffer more than older ones due to their emotional immaturity. IT corporations themselves contribute greatly to addictive behavior with their infinite scrolling and social reward systems of likes. Such algorithmic design hits the most vulnerable target: it is incredibly addictive for the adolescent brain, whose reward system matures far more rapidly than the capacity for self-control.

How can we help children live healthily in the digital age? Research shows that simply limiting social media use to 30 minutes per day quickly reduces feelings of loneliness and eases depressive symptoms, while banning phones at night restores healthy sleep. At the family level, strict bans always give way to dialogue: co-creating rules of digital hygiene and discussing risks works far more effectively. However, the review’s authors insist: to truly protect children, society must demand that social network developers abandon manipulative, addiction-causing design and ensure adequate moderation of toxic content.
